HABEMUS PAPAM!
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was elected as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis. His election is historic, marking the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, Pope Leo XIV brings a wealth of pastoral and administrative experience to his new role. For the second conclave in a row, the College of Cardinals shocked the watching world with its choice for the next pope. U.S. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was a long-shot favorite, precisely because he was American — conventional wisdom being that a pope should not be drawn from a global superpower. But on Thursday (May 8), the smiling man who emerged from behind the red curtains in St. Peter’s loggia was a Chicago-born, Peruvian missionary — and the youngest man to don the white zucchetto in nearly 50 years.

On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the papal name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a historic moment as he becomes the first American to lead the Church's 1.4 billion members worldwide.
The announcement was made by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica with the traditional Latin proclamation: “Habemus Papam!” White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the successful conclusion of the conclave.
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV has a rich multicultural heritage, with French, Italian, and Spanish roots. He dedicated decades to missionary and pastoral work in Peru, serving as a parish priest, seminary rector, and later as Bishop of Chiclayo. In 2023, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a pivotal role overseeing global bishop appointments.
In his first public address, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with the words, “ Peace be with all of you!”, setting a tone of unity and hope for his papacy.
His election comes at a critical time, as the Church faces challenges such as internal divisions, global diplomatic tensions, and the need to address past clerical abuse scandals. Pope Leo XIV is seen as a unifying figure, chosen as a compromise candidate to guide the Church through these complex times.

May Christ the Good Shepherd walk beside him as he shepherds the flock entrusted to his care.
And may Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede for him always. AMEN.
